Siem Reap’s “Nom Banh Chok" To Be Registered as National Trademark

SIEM REAP: Siem Reap’s famous traditional noodle dish, Nom Banh Chok, was inspected and evaluated for a national trademark by the Ministry of Commerce's Department of Intellectual Property in collaboration with the Siem Reap Provincial Administration who announced the move on the morning of 4 April 2023.

Presiding over the First Congress of Siem Reap Khmer Noodle Producers And Traders in Siem Reap’s Preah Dak commune, Director General of Trade Support Services for the Ministry of Commerce, Ho Sivyong, said that in order to promote domestic products and the processing of export products as stated in the Trade Integration Strategy 2019-2023, the Ministry of Commerce is speeding up the registration of geographical features, goods and national trademarks.

Mr. Ho credits the notoriety and traditional style of Siem Reap’s noodles for the marketing potential of Nom Bahn Chok. The delicious dish has been identified as a product which will help Cambodian noodles better compete in the national and international markets. The ministry plans to register it as a national trademark later this month.

The Department of Intellectual Property for the Ministry of Commerce already conducted a preliminary study into the possibility of trademark registration in order to establish a name brand for Cambodian noodle products which will be produced, processed and packaged by manufacturers in Siem Reap. They are to operate in accordance with the standards and demands for exports to foreign markets to support the diversification of Cambodia's exports, which aims to expand the domestic production chain.

Ho Sivyong added that registering Nom Banh Chok as a national trademark will strengthen consumer confidence and expand Cambodia’s presence in the overseas noodle market as the production origin is clarified and standardized. He hopes it will increase tourism numbers from those wishing to try the dish where it originated, providing opportunities to the agricultural community and additional sources of income to those wanting to promote Cambodia’s traditional culture.
